Dawlish Carnival is that is run purely by volunteers.
The committee consists of 15 people that give up their time for free to plan and run carnival events.
There are over 250 helpers that make a difference by giving up their time during the week.
You want to be a part of
it? We need your help!
Whether for a few hours, a few days or the whole week.
But what can YOU do and how do you get to be a volunteer? Look at the different roles below and if it interests you complete the form at the bottom of this page. We need over 200 volunteers for the Airshow alone!
Site Crew
Although mainly committee members we do have Dawlish Air Cadets that help us with site set up and take down. Also last year we had a team of people who gave up their time to help ensure the arena and carnival base was setup and equipped and all events had the necessary equipment whether pyrotechnics or water filled balloons! They also assist with setting up the arena and modifying it for different events. In preparation for Carnival Day they set up Park and Ride signs, organise the procession line up area, set up the airshow control points and VIP area. We need around 5 people to help as site crew.
Side Stall Helper
We operate a number of side stalls and a bouncy castle, we need 10 people at any one time to man the stalls which open 10am - 7pm for each of the 8 days we run.
Airshow Stewards
A new post for 2005 but we will require stewards to help assist the public, assist with crowd control and be on stand by in the event of an incident to keep the public safe. You will be the public face during the Airshow and will be trained by our Chief Saftety Officer in how to deal with public enquiries and how to deal with specific problems and questions. Training will take place on a weekend before the main carnival week. If you do have experience in stewarding, let us know because we do need stewards supervisors to lead teams of stewards. Stewards must be aged over 18. We need 25 stewards and 4 supervisors.
Procession Marshals
This year we will require around 30 marshals to help prepare the carnival route, form up the procession and steward the procession. Some will walk with the procession, other will man pinch points and road junctions to ensure the procession runs smoothly and safely and that the spectators and procession entrants remain safe and enjoy the event. You will be trained in how marshal a procession, how to deal with problems and how to use handheld radios. Training will take place on a weekend before the main carnival week. We need 20 marshals and more procession stewards.
First Aiders
Although most of the week's events have first aid provided by St John's Ambulance, during the Airshow and procession we will need around 30 extra qualified First Aiders (aged over 16) to man first aid stations, patrol amongst the crowds and walk the procession. You will have to supply a copy of your First Aid Certificate. We need 30 first aiders. Also 4 nurses, 4 paramedics and 2 doctors to man a central medical facility.
Collectors
The carnival and airshow is funded primarily by voluntary donations through public collections. We never have enough people to help collect and this year will be looking for over 100 people to help collect during the airshow on the beach, in the town centre and in other viewing areas. You must be over 16 to be given a collecting bucket and will be expected to sign for the bucket you take. You will be given an Official Collector's ID for the afternoon and trained on the do's and don'ts of collecting money. You will then return the bucket to a set point by a set time.
General Helpers
Anyone any age (under 18s with parents or as part of organised youth group only). If you don't mind what you do then brilliant, we'll put you where needed. If however there is something you don't want to or can't do please tell us in the comment box. We all do this to enjoy ourselves and everybody has things we don't like doing.
